Stonehenge

What to See: Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, in the South of England, 8 miles north of Salisbury. The site is one of the most famous attractions in the world dating back over 5000 years with scientists still puzzling over its origins. Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks. Tickets for Stonehenge Tours can be purchased online using our link.

Built for an unknown purpose (many tales abound) the stones that make up the ring were transported from Wales to create this legendary Neolithic monument. A triumph of architecture it is said that this structure was built over 1500 years but why? Was it a burial ground, a huge calendar or a temple perhaps. Some see it as a sun-worshipping monument. Whatever the reason if you visit the South of England and perhaps London and Windsor then you must also make a trip to Stonehenge.  [ BUY STONEHENGE TICKETS ]

In the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, 66 miles from Windsor (about 1hour and ten minutes by car or coach), Stonehenge sits eerily in the distance, visible from the road and the new visitor centre makes it easier to get around the popular attraction with the added benefit of free transport from the carpark to the monument. The monolith has an aura of mystery and part of it is aligned with the midsummer sunrise and so for a long time has been a source of inspiration to many and being sacred is a site to be respected and admired. There is much more information available on the creation of Stonehenge and theories of why and how it was built at the visitor centre.
